Simulated Body Fluid
Pickering Laboratories’ Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) is manufactured according to ISO 23317 (Third edition, 2014) and is designed to test materials of surgical implants. It is known that various materials can bind to living bone by forming a layer of apatite. When a bioactive material is implanted in a living body, a thin layer rich in Ca and P forms on its surface. The material then connects to the living tissue through this apatite layer without a distinct boundary.
Our SBF formulation, specified in the ISO 23317 method, has an ionic composition similar to human plasma and has been useful in evaluating apatite-forming ability of implant materials. The apatite formed from Simulated Body Fluid is similar to natural bone mineral in both composition and structure. As SBF is similar to human plasma it also can be used to evaluate drug release from intramuscular, intravenous, and subcutaneous injections as well as from implantable dosage forms.
The Simulated Body Fluid has pH = 7.40 ± 0.01 @ 36.5 ± 0.1 °C
