SIMULATED Vaginal FLUID

Simulated Vaginal Fluid

Current vaginal pharmaceutical preparations range from formulations intended for localized treatment to systems designed for systemic drug delivery, including hormonal therapies and therapeutic peptides or proteins. During the development of such formulations, it is essential to evaluate not only the dissolution and bioavailability of the active compounds but also the bioadhesive properties of the preparation.

Pickering Laboratories Simulated Vaginal Fluid is formulated to mimic the composition and properties of vaginal secretions in healthy, nonpregnant, premenopausal women. It reproduces key chemical characteristics known to influence the performance and efficacy of intravaginal drug delivery systems.

A modified version of this simulated vaginal fluid, containing mucin, is specifically designed to assess the adhesive behavior of vaginal formulations such as gels, microparticles, and other drug delivery systems. This modification enhances the relevance of in vitro testing by better approximating the mucosal environment encountered in vivo.

Stabilized formulations contain preservatives to inhibit microbial growth, allowing them to be stored at room temperature without compromising their integrity. Formulations without a preservative should be stored frozen to maintain stability and prevent microbial proliferation.
